Health and Safety Technical Queries

With regards to lighting, will delegates be expected to know about lux at level 2?

No, delegates will not be expected to know about lux at this level and correct answers will not include this information.

We have been asked when deaths or major injuries must be reported.

Should a fatality or incident occur, the Local Authority or HSE may well be contacted by the business immediately after the incident has happened, this is quite common place (and legally acceptable) and would obviously mean that the ICC had not been informed. The business must therefore follow this initial report up with completion of form F2508 within 10 days.

We received a query from an individual asking what should be reported under RIDDOR.

Under RIDDOR all fractures must be reported unless they are to fingers, thumbs and toes. However, if an injury causes the employee to have more than 3 days off work or stops them from carrying out their normal work duties then this would also need reporting. Therefore while some injuries may or may not need reporting, depending on the circumstances, all breaks and fractures must be reported unless exempted as stated.

There is a legal differentiation between the requirements of RIDDOR and the requirement to keep an accident book.

Is there a difference between a slipped disc and a prolapsed disc?

No, they are different ways of referring to a medical condition of the back which can occur after an accident or as a result of poor lifting and moving technique. The disc gets squeezed out from between the bones and presses on the spinal nerves. The result can be 'sciatica' - this is a severe and long term condition which causes extremes of pain down the leg.
